From the Desk of Daniel Ferszt: Rest in Peace Mr. Salinger 1919-2010

catcher in the rye cover 181x300 From the Desk of Daniel Ferszt: Rest in Peace Mr. Salinger 1919 2010

The Catcher In the Rye - By J.D. Salinger

I took to reading at around 17 or 18 years old. Don’t get me wrong, I knew how to read before then, I just didn’t like to. My A.D.D. wouldn’t have it.

Catcher In the Rye was one of the few books that made the cut for me earlier on. I was around 14 years old when a friend turned me on to the coolest, most anti-grown-up thing I’d ever read. It was a living thing with its own red cover and gold-yellow lettering.

And the author’s name was J.D. Salinger – so cool.

I read it and kept it like a secret. It was a rebellious book written just for me; a kid who wanted to rebel.

When I finally told my mom that I read  Catcher, she smiled and told me that she remembered sitting with her girlfriends when she was my age, reading from the same “dirty book” and reveling in the sweet magic of teenage rebellion.

I’d like to propose a toast to the creator of a timeless classic that has and will continue to live on through generations. Heck, you even managed to entertain me.

Rest in peace, Mr. Salinger.

From the Desk of Daniel Ferszt: A Brief Look at 2009 and a Prayer for 2010

two col ruler

20060223214331 desk monkey From the Desk of Daniel Ferszt: A Brief Look at 2009 and a Prayer for 2010Greetings!

Another year for the history books and, WOW, what a year it was! The word I would use to describe 2009 is inspiring. So many out there are currently struggling or have struggled through a challenging economy with some losing their jobs and businesses and having to start over at square one. However, I have also seen some of these very same professionals fight the fight and come back with a vengeance.

Our first asset? Creativity. A challenging economy presents us with an incredible opportunity: a challenge. It forces us to leave our comfort zones so we can learn new methods of survival, acquire new networking skills and generate ideas and options from thin air. It also forces us to become better at what we do.

We have been fortunate to have online social media platforms such as Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube to enable us to make the entire world aware of our talents and services in an instant, at no charge. I became committed to learning how to ride the ever-changing waves of online public relations and marketing, which has strengthened my abilities and benefitted my clients. I took “old school” strategies and combined them with the new media. More importantly, I made new contacts and friends, which leads me to our second asset: each other.

I guess now we can finally get over the fear that computers will eventually cause everyone to become Howard Hughes type recluses. Networks are constantly evolving. People are actually helping people by getting each other jobs and gigs, hence spreading the money around. From what I can see, the human connection is growing stronger through technology, not weaker.

So, here is my final take on 2009 and my prayer for 2010: This past year has been a learning- through-fire period for so many of us. Now is the time to kick it into action. Now is the time to be better than yesterday. Now is the time to recognize our two greatest assets: Our creativity and each other.

May Gd bless you and yours with a happy, healthy and successful new year.

Sincerely,

Daniel

OUTREACH! WITH DENNIS BROWN

OUTREACH! with DENNIS BROWN – RECOVERY ON THE DIAL

There are few shows on the radio today that take on the issues of addiction, abuse, anger, marriage, divorce, depression and parenting. There is only one show on the radio today that does it with controversy, honesty, excitement and…comedy?

OUTREACH! with DENNIS BROWN broadcasts on 97.1 FREE FM Saturdays from 11pm-midnight. It was created to bring hope and awareness to a demographic of southern California men and women ages 18 to 55.

The show supports the NESS COUNSELING CENTER, a non-profit, non-sectarian community based outpatient counseling service agency that provides a full range of life enhancing services, including, but not limited to, individual and family counseling, drug and alcohol treatment programs, drug assessments, drug testing, paternity testing, parenting classes, monitored child exchange and visitation, domestic violence/anger management group sessions, and hate crime educational classes in the greater Los Angeles area.

Host Dennis Brown is the Executive Director of the NESS Counseling Center. He has been helping individuals and families who have fallen victim to addiction and abuse for over 30 years. His approach to recovery is non-judgmental; however, he accepts no excuses.

Co host and Producer Daniel “Doc” Ferszt is President of Global Point Public Relations. Doc has over 20 years of experience in entertainment and comedy and provides a funny counter point to Dennis. The dynamic between Dennis and Doc keeps the show fresh and appealing to listeners, who frequently call in to discuss the topics in play.

“I’m a skeptical guy,” says Doc. “But when I see how many people Dennis and the staff at the NESS Center help continuously, I am moved beyond words. I had to bring this to a medium that would affect thousands. Radio is that medium and I knew it would work.”

Dennis agrees, “Call me a co-dependent, but I love my work. People need to know that they have a place to turn to when rock bottom comes knocking.”

And every week, more and more people show that to be true. They turn the dial to OUTREACH! with DENNIS BROWN.
